A good healthy diet high in fiber, lean meats, eggs, complex carbohydrates, whole grains, antioxidant foods, healthy beverages and low in added sugar and salt help people lose weight, gain weight, lower cholesterol, increase energy, improve brain function, lower blood pressure, reduce cancer risk and have a more positive lifestyle!
You need to eat a lot more food and a lot more fiber!
Diets that exclude foods from any food group are fad diets and do not lead to permanent weight loss or solve any other health issues.
First, try to kick your fiber intake to 40 grams of both soluble and insoluble fiber.
Whatever you do, get your fiber from your food, not from a jar.
Fruits and vegetables have good fiber in them.
Try a breakfast cereal with at least 20% of recommended daily allowance of fiber in it. They are usually low in sugar so there is a double benefit. Blueberries or raspberries on top add more fiber and antioxidants. But fresh or frozen, not the kind in syrup.
Raw nuts are a great source of fiber, healthy fats, and antioxidants. Avocados are the best.
Lots of beans, peas, and grains are high fiber. Whole grain breads. Fiber kicks up the metabolism so you actually burn more calories. These foods will give you more gas in the beginning but if eaten daily, the bacteria in the digestive tract will elevate lowering the gas output.
This will get you on the path for a healthy daily bowel movement. This helps clean the system and aids healthy digestion.
I know it goes against everything you’ve heard but eating lots of the right foods will actually help you lose weight!
Next, take a basic daily multivitamin. Don’t look at your multivitamin as nutrition but more as an insurance policy. Think of it as filling in the gaps in your daily diet as opposed to a primary source of nutrients. If you are a woman, you may want a plus iron formula.
Last, you HAVE to drink lots of water to be healthy. But you can disguise it. Fill your glass all the way full with ice before pouring low sugar beverages. Try iced green tea with a splash of orange juice in it for sweet. More antioxidants. Add lemon juice to water for flavor. Slice up a cucumber and float it in pitcher of water. Gives it salty fresh taste. But you must drink up to 100 oz of water daily to help your body get rid of waste and the toxins it contains.
You must combine a healthy diet with exercise to multiply the benefit. Whether an hour a day in the weight room or just a 30 minute brisk walk every day, the added benefit of a regular exercise program really do increase and accelerate healthy weight loss. Add exercise as your injury allows.
You will get motivated when the changes start happening, I promise.
Good luck.

Have you tried dieting?
Go online and figure out your Basal Metabolic Rate – The number of calories you would burn if you stayed in bed all day. Then subtract 500 calories from that. That is how many calories you need to consume to lose at least a pound of fat every week.
Since 3500 calories = a pound of fat.
500 calories [[less than what your body burns off]] multiplied by 7 days a week = 3500 calories. A pound of fat.

Counting calories is a good way. Your weight depends on the calories you take in, and exercise does too. Say you had to take in 1500 calories a day to stay at your weight. But you started eating 2000 calories every week. You would gain 1 lb each week because since your consuming 500 excess calories, 500cal x 1 week = 3500 extra calories. 3500 calories = 1 lb. Extra calories is stored as fat, which is extra weight.

I have been thinking about taking Lipo 6 weight loss supplements. Do you know of any side effects?

answers:

Please do not try diet pills because they are not the long term answer and many can cause negative health effects. Consider a healthy lifestyle change.

The following healthy living recommendations will help you if you’re trying to lose weight, tone up your muscles, have aspirations of building lean muscle mass, are attempting to get a wash board stomach, or just want to feel better:

*1) Burn more calories then you’re consuming everyday and measure your results using the following formula: Calories Consumed minus Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) minus Physical Activity minus the Thermic Effect of Food (TEF). A website that explains this formula in more detail and will help you determine how many calories you need to reach or maintain a certain weight is at http://www.primusweb.com/fitnesspartner/library/weight/calsburned.htm

Get an online, desktop, or cell phone diet and fitness calculator. This will allow you to easily calculate the above formula, set goals, log your daily calorie consumption, and register your physical activities.

Set realistic goals for your ideal body weight. Here are two websites that will calculate a suggested body weight:
Adults: http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm
Teens/Children: http://www.kidshealth.org/kid/exercise/weight/bmi.html

It is difficult and unhealthy to lose more than one or two pounds per week. There are 3,500 calories in a pound. If you eat 500 fewer calories per day for a week you will lose one pound. If you burn through exercise 500 more calories per day for a week you will lose one pound.

*2) Eat natural and organic foods found on earth versus something created by a corporation to make money. Eat meals in small portions throughout the day and take a good multi-vitamin supplement.

Do not try fad diets or diet pills. Avoid “High Glycemic Load Carbs” (sugar, pastries, desserts, refined starches such as breads, pasta, refined grains like white rice; high starch vegetables such as potatoes) and drink lots of water. Read this article for more information on high GL Carbs:

Look at all areas where you can enhance your health. For example, make improvements in the quality of the air you breathe. Review outdoor air quality forecasts where you live and get an indoor air purifier.

I know of a really great product line that will definitely help you achieve the body image you are hoping for in a matter of weeks. It consists of all natural supplements (no tea products included) that help counteract the unwanted parts of your diet and assist your body in losing calories while gaining muscle. You should definitely check it out, it’s called The Core 4 System made by Xyngular. You can take a look and see what you think at www.xyngular.com/caseysmith.

Karlyle, have you ever thought of drinking green tea instead? A lot of people use this as a diet weight loss plan and it only has benefits that are healthy for you,it contains a lot of antioxidants and it’s a natural diuretic as well.I drink it every day and have for years, these products that you are speaking of are very expensive with side effects too.I’d like to see you take off weight the healthy way,by eating chicken, turkey and fish and eating fresh vegetables as well.Only eat whole grain bread instead of white and when you prepare the meat it should be baked or broiled instead of being fried. If you like low fat yogurt opt for low fat or lite or you can buy vanilla and add some fresh to it.3500 calories equals one pound of body fat and you would have to consume under this number to achieve any weight loss. It’s really important to drink a lot of water to flush out all of the toxins from your system as well,I always have a water bottle in hand. The first five pounds that you lose are water and then you get down to the fat,any physical activity that you can do will burn off the calories that you are consuming.I also take some Mega Fish Oil,and some Vitamin B and a Multi vitamin too,you can munch on some plain pop corn too, don’t look at it as a diet, look at it as establishing new healthy eating patterns. My motto is eat to live, don’t live to eat, make sense to you? I hope this is of some help to you and you will rethink about changing your mind regarding these supplements.Just Tomb Raiders advice and thoughts for you.

Hi Gemma,

Losing weight at a fast rate is not good. It’s far better you do it slowly and steadily.

You’d put on weight when your calorie intake is higher than it’s spend. Be cautious about what you are eating. You need to control the junk food like chocolate and fatty foods that will help to put on weight. You need to work out and do some physical exercises like laborious work, walking, dancing sort of stuffs so that you burn down extra calorie.

Along with diet and exercise, you can take weight loss supplements as you’ve mentioned if the you are excessively overweight. You need to consult a physician or dietitian before doing so. Make sure you good for high quality supplements.

Hi. I am a guy and have had the same problem all my life. Like you i am a natural ectomorph (long limbs, high metabolic rate). Although it is very hard for us i can assure you it it possinle to gain weight. Like i explain to people when they are trying to lose weight, it is all about calorie intake vs expenditure. If you can eat more calories than your body can burn you WILL gain weight. If you burn say 1500 calories lying in bed (our basal metabolic rate) and say 1000 calories through exercise this totals 2500. You would need to eat 2500 cals per day to stay at the same weight. To gain weight you need to eat 2500 plus calories. A surplus of 500 per day equates to 3500 per week which is (1 pound of fat gained). If you are an active girl you will really find this hard. I have gained around 3 lbs of fat in 2 years. I eat all day, and 3 times more than the average man does. But because of my high metabolic rate and sport i do not gain fat. However i have gained over 2 stone of muscle in two years which is even better for me and has changed the way i look for the better. I realise this is not an option for. Good luck anyway

How can I gain weight / muscle? I’m Vegetarian?

Well as stated in the title, I am a male vegetarian (non-negotiable) and would really like to gain weight and muscle. I am 16 (turning 17 at the end of the month) about 5ft 9.5in and weigh 120 pounds. I would consider myself rather thin and weak. I am currently not active at all. Should I just eat like ten times a day and actually work out?

Some just have naturally fast metabolisms…some starve themselves or purge or do other unhealthy things to be thin…skinny isn’t attractive or healthy…don’t set that as a personal goal…

As for you trying to shape up, bravo!!! Keep it up (as long as you aren’t losing more than you should)…if you are hungry, then eat…just make sure you eat healthy foods and not junk…keep up the healthy eating and exercise and you won’t have to worry about regaining the weight…it’s when people go back to their old ways that they pack the pounds back on…

Worried that I won’t gain muscle from my training?

Can I share my workout plans with you guys? Basically, my long-term goal is to get nice, long, good sized muscles on my entire upper body. The look I’m going for is: http://data.whicdn.com/images/4809711/tumblr_lbgvigDF8t1qb83lwo1_500_thumb.jpg?1289067292

My stats:
- 16 years
- 6’2″
- 157 lbs

Info:
- Vegan
- I’m perceived as very skinny by BMI and other sources (like friends), but I have a flat chest and stomach flab

Workout plan:
- 10 minute uphill run M-F, in the morning. No breakfast before.
- 20 minute strength training after run on Mon, Wed, Fri (all upper body) with 10 pound dumbbells.
- Clean diet with sources of healthy protein

Note that I plan to increase the weight of my dumbbells and the length of my lifting session in the coming weeks. I have been doing this routine for about 8 days. I’m just really nervous that I won’t be able to see any muscle gain because, I don’t know, maybe I’m doing my exercise intense enough? or because I don’t eat red meat?
If you want lean muscle than you do more reps and less weight, If you want bulky muscle you do less reps and more weight around 8-10 reps. And you wanna work the major muscle groups on monday wednesday and friday… This way your body has time to rest, the muscle doesnt build while you working out it builds in the rest days. So try doing chest shoulders and triscepts and abs on monday, cardio tuesday, back and biscepts and abs wednesday, cardio or yoga thursday, legs and back and abs friday, cardio on saturday, and sunday is a rest or stretch day. And the more intensity you poor into you workouts the more results will show… Dont be worried you wont get results just trust your body. Also protien shakes… Not sure if vegans drink thos but they are important. Good luck.
